 v      Why barcodes?

We use a terrific bar coding system to make Just For Kids and Kay’s Closet the most efficient experience for shoppers and consignors.  Not only does it make checkout quicker, it enables us to pay consignors faster and more accurately.  At the end of the sale (on Pickup and Payday), you will receive a detailed inventory printout of all sold items with your check!

Added Bonus! Consignors – During the sale, you will be able to log into your account on this web site and check what has sold and your total sales up that point.  The site will be updated periodically through the week.

v      I don’t want to enter my items online, what do I Do?

DO NOT hand write any tags.  If you do not want to enter your items online, you will need to make a handwritten inventory list of your items.  Your clothing items must remain in order according to your list and be separated by size.  Consignors doing handwritten inventory sheets have an earlier deadline for Receiving.  See Receiving dates.  E-mail me, and I can send you an inventory sheet.  Be sure you check all instructions here on the web site before starting.

v       How much money do I make on my items?

Consignors keep 2/3 of the selling price

You select the price for each of your items!

You also choose which, if any, of your items may be sold for ½ off on the last day of the sale.  Items with a red dot WILL NOT be sold ½ off on the last day.  We will indicate this (with red dots) on your bar-coded tag if you selected your item to NOT be ½ off.  These items with red dots will remain full price.

Items without red dots will be sold at ½ off on the last day of the sale.

v      What can I consign at Kay’s Closet?

All items must be in excellent, like-new condition.

We will accept your ‘Once Loved’ and gently worn:

·        Outerwear – jackets, coats

·        Accessories – scarves, handbags, shoes

·        All sizes accepted from petites to plus.

·        QUALITY            items only please!

·        Quality means designer, name brand and better department store brand name items.

Clothing must be seasonal, related to that sale event.

  • Only Spring/Summer clothing accepted for the Spring sale and
  • Only Fall/Winter clothing accepted for the Fall sale.

v      What may NOT be consigned in Kay’s Closet?

  • Unacceptable items include anything that is not in excellent condition
  • Items not properly prepared according to our guidelines
  • Clothing that is not on plain wire hangers
  • Clothing that is out of season or out of style

v      What items are NOT accepted for the Spring Sale?

Fleece, flannel, wool, or corduroy items, sweat suits, coats.

“OK” items include lightweight, long sleeve cotton T-shirts, jeans, pants, lightweight spring jackets, and spring sweaters

v      What items are NOT accepted for the Fall Sale?

Swim suits, swim trunks, tank tops, sleeveless shirts, sandals, items with spaghetti straps, shorts, 1 pc short rompers, sundresses, items using lightweight summer fabrics, beach/pool accessories.

Capri pants are OK.

v      Are there a minimum or maximum number of items I may bring?

There is no minimum number of items required in order to participate.  However, if you would like to shop early at the consignor or worker preview sale, you must consign at least 15 like-new acceptable items.  As long as all items are in excellent condition, there is no maximum number of items that may be consigned.

Shoes:  Limit to your BEST 6 pairs.  Must be in excellent condition.  See Item Preparation or more info regarding shoes.

v      How do I price my items?

You may ask about 20-40% of what you would pay for the item now.  If it is new with tags, you may ask 30-50% of the retail price.  You may also price your item in this range if it is unique or not available in this area.  This is not a garage sale, so don’t under price your items; on the other hand, we are not a department store so don’t overprice your items.  After you have participated a few times, you will get a feel for it.  If you are afraid you may be pricing too high, allow the item to go ½ price on the last day if it hasn’t sold yet (You do this when you enter your items).  Always keep in mind what current prices run.  A good source is a sale flyer from area stores, and department store catalogs.

v      Why do you only accept clothing on plain wire hangers?

Wire hangers are required because they slide well on our racks and they do not take up as much room as plastic hangers.  Plastic and Plastic coated wire hangers are not allowed because they do not slide on the racks and they are not durable enough to hold up to the many times that clothing items are handled and moved within the store.  Also, when customers come to hangers that won’t slide, they skip those items and move on and your items may not sell.

Don’t have wire hangers lying around?  Ask around and check with family, friends, your church or school.  Anyone that has a job requiring a uniform probably has uniform service.  Many times, these companies do not take their used hangers back.  Many people would be glad to give them to you.   Check with people who “Dress Up” for work, they probably have a lot of dry cleaning done.  Dry cleaners usually have a “free” box of used hangers that have been returned by customers but sell new hangers for a high price.

If you can’t find any, you may purchase hangers (and safety pins) at Just for Kids during the time we are setting up the store and during Receiving.  We have regular sized and juvenile sized hangers for sale at our wholesale cost.  We do not make any money from selling hangers. They are offered as a convenience for our consignors.  If you are concerned about incurring a cost for the hangers, just reflect that expense in the price of your items.  You will find it is insignificant in the end.

v      When do I bring my things?

Bring your items during Receiving week.  See When/Where for dates/times available.  See Preparation guidelines for detailed information on having your items properly prepared.

v      Can I bring items to Receiving more than once?

Yes, you may make more than one trip with your items.  You will only need to sign your Agreement once.

v      What’s an Agreement?

The Agreement is a simple ½ page legal document between you as the seller, and Just For Kids as the organizer.  It is to make sure you understand discount day, are aware of the Pickup day, etc.  It is available for you to read and sign at Receiving.  We can not sell any of your items until the Agreement is signed.

v      Can I bring my children with me to the Preview sale?

At this time, our policy is no children under the age of 8 unless they are in a stroller (infant/toddler).  We can only accommodate a certain number of people in the store at one time.  Counting children would prevent other consignors from getting in to shop in a timely manner.  There is also a safety issue.  This is a preview sale and the store is still being set up and readied for opening to the public.  There may be racks/shelves in process of being assembled and moved.  We don’t want your children injured.  Many consignors find they have a much more enjoyable shopping experience without their children.  Shoppers have time to look at all items and take their time in making their selections.  Unfortunately there is usually a wait to check out and children often get fussy.  There is also no public restroom.  If shopping for your children, bring your children's measurements and your measuring tape.  A cardboard cutout of your child’s foot will help you if you will be shopping for shoes.

If you cannot find childcare for your child and they are stroller age or over the age of 8, they may accompany you if they stay by your side.  For safety sake, they need to be with you at all times.  If you are shopping for clothes and the child is in the toy section, we will help them find you.  If we continue to have problems with unruly children, we will change our policy to “No children allowed at the preview sales”.  Unfortunately, a few people will ruin it for everyone.

v      Why do I have to leave my purse, backpack, tote bag or diaper bag in the car?

To protect the merchandise, we have instituted this policy on our busiest days FOR ALL SHOPPERS.  Our busiest days include the Consignor Preview Sale and the 2 Saturdays we are open.  Leave these items in the car.  All strollers/large purses are subject to inspection upon leaving the store.  Once again, this is to protect the consignors from loss.  It is also more pleasurable to shop without a large bag.  Use a fanny pack if needed.

We do not have shopping carts.  Bring a laundry basket with your name on it to use as you are shopping.

v      How do I get my check?

You may pick up your check during Pickup and Payday when you will also pick up any unsold items.  If you prefer to donate your unsold items, or you miss the Pickup day, your check will be mailed.  Any items not picked up on Pickup and Payday are automatically donated.  Don’t forget this Pickup and Payday if you want your unsold items back!

v       Can a friend pick up my items and my check?

You may have a friend pick up your unsold items on Pickup and Payday (they must present your consignor ID# for verification).  Due to security issues, we must mail your check if you do not pick it up yourself.

v      What happens to my unsold items at the end of the sale?

You may pick up your unsold items on Pickup and Payday when you pick up your check or you may choose to donate your unsold items.  We like to select a charity that will not be reselling the items, but giving them away to those in need.  We are always in need of volunteers to deliver these donations.  Please let us know if you can help.  If you know of a worthy charity or a family in need and would be willing to deliver the items, please let us know during Receiving.

v      What if I miss Pickup and Payday?

Unfortunately, we are unable to keep unsold items in the store past Pickup and Payday.  We have a deadline in which to disassemble our fixtures and move out of the space.  Your unsold items will be donated to charity and your check (if a check is due you) will be mailed to the address we have on file. You are responsible for remembering to come on Pickup and Payday.  If you do not pick up your items on Pickup and Payday, they are donated.

v      I want to be notified of future sales, how do I sign up?

Please bookmark this website and use it as your main source of information.  It will be updated to reflect the most current info available.  Reminders will be sent via snail mail to past consignors.  Mailings are sent bulk mail, so if it is close to sale time and you haven’t received anything from us, please check this website for details.  You are added to the mailing list when you sign up (via this site) to participate.

v      How do I sign up to volunteer at the store?

All questions about volunteering to work can be answered by visiting the special Worker Section of this website.  There are FAQ’s about working and the calendar of available times.  You may email Melissa to reserve your times.
